About
I am the Director of User Research at Flatiron Health, where I lead a team charged with supporting Flatiron’s mission to accelerate cancer research through the most advanced real-world evidence platform in oncology. We work across the electronic health record (EHR) and real-world evidence business units. In addition, I scale user research operations to expand the reach of our effort and maintain high-quality research.
Examples of the topics I have researched include: creating point-of-care tools to help oncologists provide evidence-based care to the patients; incorporating ML-derived variables to identify high-risk patients, defining new data sets for expanded uses cases for our electronic data marts (EDMs), testing safety for high risk patient workflows, and testing compliance for regulatory approval of our EHR.
Prior to my tenure at Flatiron, I was the Head of User Research at Thumbtack, where I built the company’s user research function and team. Our output was essential to increasing sign-up retention, driving user engagement, and transitioning the company’s business model. As a co-founder at health innovation incubator, Spruce Institute, I led product development and was recognized as a Top Innovator in Health. While Design Strategist at Jump Associates, I supported Fortune 500 companies through innovation challenges, such as helping Welch Allyn create efficiency-enhancing tools for primary care physicians.
Empathy is essential to my work; I believe great products and technologies are best when aligned with user needs. User research has the capacity to uncover powerful insights that can inform the foundation of great products, improve processes and engagement, and reveal relevant and high-impact uses of new technologies, such as AI, ML, and LLMs.
Health and fitness are personal passions. I’m a long-time biohacker, obsessed with food quality and cooking—so much so that I wrote the top-selling book, Perfecting Paleo. I travel the world in search of great wind and waves to kiteboard. One day, I hope to be a decent surfer. Whenever I can, I love to get into the mountains to hike or ski. Ikibana is a weekly joy.
